About the Author
Margaret Tourond-Townson is a recently retired elementary school principal and teacher with many years experience in special education and early French Immersion. Throughout her classroom teaching career, Margaret loved doing drama with her students, and as an administrator she promoted the arts in her schools.
Margaret was brought up on a small farm in Choiceland, Saskatchewan, and attended a little country school 3 miles away, which she reached by ski in the winter and on horseback in the spring and fall!
Margaret loved music as a child and always wanted to play the piano. But when she finally took piano lessons, she memorized the songs and did not actually learn to read music. Fortunately, her music teacher eventually discovered this, and Margaret had to learn to read notes properly. Music is an important part of Margaret’s plays.
At 13, Margaret moved to Lennoxville, Quebec, where she learned to speak French because she wanted to do things with her French-speaking friends! Later on she won a scholarship to Laval University’s French Summer School.
Margaret attended Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, then went to Macdonald College in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue for her teacher’s training. She took two years off teaching to complete a Bachelor of Education degree at McGill University and a few years later a Masters in Education degree at University of Ottawa.
Margaret enjoyed many years of teaching in elementary schools, and continued supply teaching even after retiring.
Margaret’s goal is to communicate with people, especially children, through writing plays that are fun, educational, and easy to integrate into the classroom. Her plays are based on experiences and ideas from her many years of teaching, along with requests and suggestions from colleagues and students.
